Lifelong Favorites
Selections from the Bookshelves of Young Readers in Japan

In 2021, the Japan Foundation in partnership with the Japanese Board on Books for Young People (JBBY) selected 59 Japanese children’s books recommended for translation and publication overseas and compiled “Lifelong Favorites—Selections from the Bookshelves of Young Readers in Japan.” This curation introduces books written in Japanese, chiefly for children between the ages of 5 and 12, that are widely read and can be found on the bookshelves of families and in local and school libraries across the country.
