Publication Announcement:
after murakami: Japanese Literature in the World Today
New title based on a JF symposium and edited by Shibata Motoyuki in bookstores October 18, 2024

#News

A new book makes available the lively discussions had at an international symposium hosted by the Japan Foundation at Waseda University in October 2023. Taking the notoriety garnered by Murakami Haruki as its point of departure, after murakami: Japanese Literature in the World Today examines, from the perspective of authors and artists hailing from around the world, how contemporary Japanese literature has increasingly expanded its universal audience over the past decade and a half.

Compiled by University of Tokyo professor emeritus Shibata Motoyuki, the Japanese-language publication pulls together the dynamic exchange of the symposium’s nine panelists and also presents short stories and excerpts from the five authors’ writings. A worthy addition to any bookshelf on contemporary literature, it is now available in bookstores across Japan.
