Kashiwaba Sachiko to Participate in Talk Events and Exchanges in Jakarta and Makassar, Indonesia
#Author Event#Author Tour#JF JakartaAt the invitation of the Japan Foundation, author Kashiwaba Sachiko will travel to Indonesia from February 15 to 23 to attend talk events with fellow children’s literature authors and publishers and participate in exchanges with junior and senior high school students studying Japanese in Jakarta and Makassar.
The Indonesian edition of Kashiwaba’s Temple Alley Summer (Kimyōji yokochō no natsu), translated from the Japanese by Andri Setiawan and Penerbit Baca as Temple Alley Summer—Musim panas di gang kuil kimyo, was published in July 2024 under a grant from the Foundation’s Support Program for Translation and Publication.
To mark its release, the Jakarta office of the Japan Foundation organized a highly successful book review contest* on Instagram for Indonesian secondary school students. A total of 217 entries were received from across the country, including from schools whose teachers are dispatched by the Foundation’s NIHONGO Partners Program. An award ceremony will be held during Kashiwaba’s stay in Jakarta.
Kashiwaba’s visit was organized by the Japan Foundation in cooperation with Kodansha Ltd. A report on the author’s Indonesian engagements will be published at a later date on this website.

Principal Events in Indonesia
◇Translators’ Workshop (Jakarta)
Speakers: Kashiwaba Sachiko, children’s literature author / Rizal Iwan, children’s literature author, translator, and actor
Moderator: Asri Pratiwi Wulandari, Japanese-Indonesian translator
In cooperation with local literary groups, the Japan Foundation, Jakarta hosts workshops for early-career translators. As a special event on the workshop’s second day, Kashiwaba Sachiko and Rizal Iwan, a popular author of children’s literature in Indonesia, will speak about the creation of mystery and fantasy stories for children.
◇ Book review contest award ceremony (Jakarta)
The top three finishers in both the individual and group categories of the December 2024 book review contest held for Temple Alley Summer will be recognized at an awards ceremony. The contest attracted 217 entries from students at 103 schools across Indonesia. Kashiwaba served on the evaluation committee.

Kashiwaba Sachiko will give a talk on Temple Alley Summer for its university readers and students of Japanese who have an interest in Japanese literature. This is a preliminary event in connection with the International Authors’ Festival held annually in May in Makassar, the principal city on Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia.

Moderator: Erika Rachma Aprilia, librarian, Katakerja Community Library
Kashiwaba Sachiko and Faisal Oddang, a poet and novelist born in Makassar, will unite to discuss the impact of regional folklore and culture on literature, and the role of literary works in transmitting regional cultural traditions to young people.
