Hirano Keiichiro was scheduled to appear at two author events in the United States in February 2026, in Iowa City and Los Angeles. A leading voice in contemporary Japanese literature, Hirano has garnered a worldwide following for his psychologically rich fiction, including his Akutagawa Prize–winning debut novel Eclipse.

The Japan Foundation New York, in collaboration with the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) and the Japanese program at University of Iowa, planned a special event at Prairie Lights Books. Hirano will read from Eclipse and engage in conversation with Kendall Heitzman, a translator of contemporary Japanese fiction and poetry and associate professor of Japanese Literature at the University of Iowa.

Los Angeles
The Japan Foundation Los Angeles will host an evening conversation with Hirano. He will share insights into his creative process, the psychological depth of his characters, and the evolution of his writing. The discussion will be moderated by Kerim Yasar, associate professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Southern California (USC).
